Chapter 3: The Ultimate Break
Amy made it to Pontian, Johor Bahru. After contemplating whether she had saved enough money, she decided to pay her father a visit. She knew that in order for this IVF experience to be successful, she needs family support. Above all, she wanted her family to accept her future child.
Amy had been online and had searched for a sperm donor. The men were asking for natural insemination and that’s just plain sex. She doesn’t want to go there. She came across this website that would ship the sperm to you anywhere in the world. It’s not IVF but it’s called Artificial Insemination. It’s really way cheaper. Hey, it took her so long to do IVF, she felt that she could do this. It’s worth a try.
Amy went to a clinic in Johor Bahru the following day just to do a routine checkup. The test results would be ready in two weeks. She could spend time with her half sisters during the time waiting.
Amy’s stepmother was wonderful. Because she’s much younger than Amy, they were more like friends. They went shopping. She brought Amy to the nearby waterfall park. Amy took many good pictures.
Of course, she would love it here. It’s so serene. She just couldn’t leave her job. Luck has it, she’s had a few gigs every now and then. It’s a start for her. Amy had also squeezed in time to do some designing for her portfolio. There are a few pieces that she feels would be good to put on t-shirts.
Comes Sunday morning, Amy woke up alone in the room. Where are her half sisters? She went to the kitchen and her father sat reading the newspaper. He told Amy that the weekends worked differently in Johor Bahru which makes Fridays and Saturdays weekends and Sundays are work days. So her sisters are in school. She made herself coffee and sat down to smoke cigarettes. Amy realised her phone was charging the whole night. She went into the room that she shares with her half sisters and unplugged her phone. She checked for messages and notifications on social media.
Amy went to the kitchen and finished her cigarettes. She tells her father that she barely scrapes by. She doesn’t want him to know she had savings otherwise he would coax her into investing in some doomed business. She had done her designing on her Tab 3 with a design app called Desygner. It’s cool really. She had also been working on her eBook with a writing app on her tablet too. Her father thought she was engrossed in playing games all along and that helped because she told him she’s out of work and that’s why she’s visiting. Actually, she called her supervisor for the Chatline to take a month long break. Amy is still nursing a broken heart.
Amy folded her prayer garment and her phone went buzzing. The clinic assistant called to inform her test results were ready. She quickly asked her father to drive her to the clinic.
Her test results were good. She had lost more weight, down to forty seven kilos. Her cholesterol levels were low. In short, she’s healthy. She asked the doctor if she wanted to do AI and if they have consultation service for that. They told her it was best for her to go to a fertility clinic but if she needed help to do the procedure assisted by the Doctor, she can always come back. Upon hearing that, she disclosed that she heard of the sperm donor website and asked if she could ship the sperm specimen to the clinic. After a lengthy discussion they came to a price point and the immediate risks were discussed. Amy told the Doctor she was willing to take her chances. But of course, it’s a hush affair because Amy is unmarried and she is a Muslim. It was not condone. Amy left the doctor’s office beaming towards her father who was waiting outside clueless.
Two days after the doctor’s visit, her menses came. Amy informed the doctor when the specimens are expected to arrive. She even left a tracking number with the clinic assistant because the timing was crucial to maximise the procedure’s success.
One week had passed. Amy received an urgent call. Her father rushed her to the clinic, of course, after she told him something is not right with her blood test results. He was panicking but waited outside the doctor’s office as instructed by her anyways.
Once inside the doctor’s office, she changed into a garment and they began the procedure. Painless. Surprisingly. Only slight discomfort which doesn’t bother Amy. She was advised against doing anything strenuous. Now, Amy needs to rest a few days more before she makes some lame excuse to go back to Singapore.
Days became two weeks. She had to make an excuse to leave.
